Announcement: If you are interested in a Scholarship Directory that has been helping parents and students from various countries to find the best scholarships since 2003, Click Here!An act of love now fosters many acts of care as the Polly Cargill Nursing Scholarship encourages East Texams to pursue a nursing career.
Applications for the scholarships are available through the Good Shepherd Medical Center-Marshall Hospital Foundation and must be received by Friday, May 15.
"The Polly Cargill Nursing Scholarship has been established in 2003 in honor of Polly Cargill by her sons Jerry and Jack Cargill and their family," said Gayle Weinberg, director of the Marshall Hospital Foundation.
"They were so pleased with the level of her care that the memorials they were receiving for her were made into a scholarship fund," said Weinberg.
The Cargills have been longtime residents of Marshall and Harrison County. Jerry Cargill owns and has remodeled serveral downtown buildings. He is co-owner of the Hotel Marshall and was recently named the Greater Marshall Chamber of Commerce's 2008 Outstanding Citizen.
So far, 20 Polly Cargill Nursing Scholarships have been given to qualifying students over the past 7 years. Recipients are awarded $500 per semester or $1,000 per school year, and the funds may be used to pay for tuition, fees, uniforms, books or travel expenses.
Applicants must be full-time students with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and be accepted into a clinical nursing program or a current nursing student in an accredited program.
The scholarships are a service to the hospital as well as the students.
"Scholarships will be awarded only to those persons who commit to one year of employment with Good Shepherd Medical Center-Marshall after graduation if there is a position available," Weinberg said.
Students who are awarded the scholarships are required to apply for employment each spring for the coming school year even if they are current recipients.
"It's just exciting to think that recipients of our scholarships are returning to work in Marshall," Weinberg said.
The goals of the scholarships are to help the nurses and bring quality care into the community.
"The scholarships help aspiring nurses achieve their dreams," said Weinberg. "They also nurture the growth of the nursing community in our hospital."
The success of the scholarships can be seen every day at Good Shepherd Medical Center-Marshall where nurses who have received the scholarships are tending patients and supporting doctors.
"It is truly exciting to walk down the hall and see someone who received a scholarship seven years ago," said Weinberg. "They are still here."
Past recipents of the scholarship have shared their joy with Weinberg saying, "I could not go to school if it were not for this scholarship.
"It is a favorite responsibility of mine, to help people receive these scholarships," said Weinberg.
A reception announcing recipients is usually held in early June, she said.
Applications are available at local schools or through the foundation's office.
